Liebeck vs. McDonalds Corporation Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In early February 1992, Mrs. Stella Liebeck, a 79-year-old grandmother from Albuquerque, New Mexico, stopped by a McDonalds drive-thru to purchase a warm cup of coffee for herself and a chicken biscuit with hash browns for her grandson, who was the driver of the vehicle. After being handed the biscuit and coffee from the cashier behind the drive-thru window, Mrs. Liebeck placed the warm Styrofoam encased coffee between her thighs while her grandson pulled the vehicle to the nearest parking curb and put the vehicle in park. Mrs. Liebeck proceeded to remove the lid of the coffee to add cream and sugar since the car was now in a stationary position. As Mrs. Liebeck attempted to remove one side of the plastic lid, the coffee instantly poured into her lap and immediately saturated her sweatpants. Since her sweatpants were drenched in the hot liquid, her skin was continuously exposed to the scalding coffee.
