Hallucinations in Macbeth Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Macbeth was a play with many motifs. A motif is recurring structures, contrasts, or literary devices that can help to develop and inform the text’s major themes. One of the motifs in this play was the hallucination that both Macbeth and his wife both experienced. The setting of the hallucinations all occur throughout the play to serve as a reminder of what Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had both done. The first hallucination takes place when Macbeth is about to kill King Duncan. Macbeth sees a bloody dagger floating through the air right outside the king’s bedroom. This bloody dagger represents the terrible path that Macbeth and his wife are about to go down. The next hallucination that Macbeth experiences is the ghost of this best friend, Banquo. Macbeth had three murderers kill Banquo and his son Fleance because the three witches had told Macbeth that the family would one day rule. Macbeth did not want to take the chance of Banquo ruling.
