The Romanovs
Grand Duchess Anastasia Nicholaevna was born on June 18, 1901. Her parents were Nicholas II, the last czar of Russia, and his wife Alexandra. Anastasia had three elder sisters: Olga, Tatiana, and Maria. Her only brother, Alexei, was born in 1904.
Background
In 1894 Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov married Alexandra Princess of Hesse-Darmstadt. They became Russias last Tsar and Tsarina.
Nicholas became czar during a period of industrial and cultural growth. Despite this, he faced many on-going problems he could not solve, such as food shortages due to bad harvests.
His hopes of increasing Russias power in the Far East led to the Russo-Japanese war, which started in February 1904, when Russia broke an agreement with Japan. Japan attacked Lüshun, a Russian naval base in China. Russia was defeated because of weaknesses, caused by social and political problems, including poor leadership and lack of troops and supplies. The war ended with the signing of the treaty of Portsmouth in September 1905.
