Defining Moments in Canadian History Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In 1867 Canada became a country as the result of the act of Confederation but continued to be dependent to the British Empire especially when it came to the defence of Canada. Over the last century Canada's involvement in two world wars put enormous strains on its society or that this, at the same time, strengthened the Canadian state. As a result, Canada's Armed Forces matured from a militia of questionable value to a force capable of planning and executing independent operations. One must look at Canadian soldiers and their accomplishments for they are much to be credited to Canada's own sense of values and identity. The following are three military events that helped influence Canada, as we know it today. Boer War The South African or Boer War of 1899-1902 was determined upon a showdown in defence of what Britain considered their commercial rights. Troops were dispatched from Britain, and, after Boer protestations were refused, the Transvaal (South Africa Republic) and the Orange Free State declared war on 12 October 1899.
