The Color of Water is a great book because it explains how Ruth (James mother) tries to raise twelve kids and send them all through college. James tries to help his mother through the hard times of moving to better places to live. Ruth was white and her kids were black so Ruth had many discriminatory problems from the local people. James and his other brothers and sisters had problem too because the where black living in a white environment. Born in Poland in 1921, Ruth Jordan was a Jewish immigrant to the United States. Ruth’s father was trying to be a rabbi so he was not making any money to make a living. They lived in Suffolk, Virginia, and opened a general store. They lived above the store, which was located in the mostly black section of town. Her father hated the black and Ruth liked them. Ruth moved away from her family because her dada wanted her to work in the store and she could not live like that. Later Ruth married a man named Andrew Dennis McBride and had eight kids.
