The novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest was by Ken Kesey, appeared in the early 60’s during a time known as the “Beat” generation. The novel is seen through the eyes of a mute Native American nicknamed Chief Bromden. The chief is a patient in an Oregon State Mental institution, and has been there for the past fifteen years. Nurse Ratched controls the Institution; a woman that strictly enforces a schedule. The schedule consists mainly of taking medicine and group “therapy,” where the patients tell each other their problems and are ridiculed by everyone including the nurse. Then R. P McMurphy arrives. McMurphy is a new patient with an unknown reason for being in the hospital. He begins as a troublemaker, but then uses his persuasion skills to help the Chief and his fellow patients break the control of the combine and set them free. McMurphy is a Christ figure for the patients. He brings them hope and builds their strength for standing up for what is right and becoming free from the power of the combine.
