Theories and explanations of how children acquire language have changed dramatically, particularly since the 1950’s. All of the theories have answered some questions and have revealed some characteristics of early language acquisitions. Each different view stems from each different school of psychology. There are four different categorised views and theories about the acquisition of language; they can be distinguished into behaviourist approach, Nativist approach, Cognitive development and Social Interactionist approach. The Behaviourist view explains the learning of language as ‘being shaped and controlled from outside the learner by a process of reinforcement (Whitehead 1997)’. The reinforcement comes from rewarding the correct responses and by ignoring or in other way penalizing the wrong responses. The Nativists believe that language is innate. Their view is children are genetically programmed to learn language and that they pick it up from the environment around them.
