The 1995 Quebec Referendum Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

By a referendum held on October 30, 1995, the people of Quebec were asked to vote whether they wanted to remain part of Canada or become independent. One has to wonder why this was necessary since the French, as well as the English, are considered a founding nation. A close vote resulted in Quebec staying in Canada, but it showed a serious problem still existed between Quebec and the rest of Canada. The results of the Quebec Referendum of 1995 indicated that one of the factors that brought about the Quebec/Canada division had its roots in Canada’s early history. A separatist government – The Parti Québécois (PQ), came into power for the first time in 1976. A referendum for separation was held in 1980 and defeated. At that time, the Federal government tried to give Quebec more power and recognize it as a “distinct society”, but failed. The English and French kept bickering. Then in 1994 the PQ were again in power and Premier Jacques Parizeau held the 1995 separation referendum.
