Antigone Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Nor did I think your orders were so strong that you, a mortal man, could over-run the gods’ unwritten and unfailing laws.” -Antigone In Sophocles' play "Antigone", Antigone decides to bury her dead brother against the legal law of Creon, the King of Thebes. Antigone believes that her brother Polyneices has broken the law by trying to take over Thebes but Antigone argues that there is a higher law than the legal law, a higher law which is based on the sacred tie of blood relations. She argues that the Gods support her in her effort to bury her brother even though the decision may cost her, her life. Antigone is determined to do everything she can to follow and abide by what she sees as a higher moral calling. Antigone believed, as did most people of her time, that a dead person's soul could not rest until that person's body was buried. Creon ordered that the body of Polyneices be left to rot unburied because he had died attacking the city, a traitor. This presents a huge problem for Antigone; she feels as if she must obey the laws of the gods and bury her brother even if it......
