World War I and the United States Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The United States has been infamous for its hope to spread democracy all over the globe, hoping to make people of other countries safe and free by promoting Western ideologies. This has been going on since the World Wars up until the war with Iraq. It sounded heroic in theory, but in truth, the United States did have a few ulterior motives. The nation’s economy had plenty to gain by entering World War I by selling military supplies to the warring countries in Europe. The United States had many reasons for entering the Great War, but making the world safe for democracy was certainly not the only one. The Great War exacted a terrible cost in Europe, as the casualties mounted to ten million by the end of it, as well as severe economic damage (Norton, 2005, p. 623). But the United States managed to stay out of the war for almost three years, upholding their policy of neutrality. When it finally did enter the war, it had a comparatively small number of casualties (Norton, 2005, p. 623). But while Europe was being torn apart and ravaged, the United States was benefitting.
