NUCLEAR POWER: IS IT TIME TO REASSESS? INTRODUCTION Though the development of Nuclear Energy as a power generation source did not take place until the mid -1950’s; by the mid-1980s1, it seemed highly probable to be destined for an early departure. The two major factors which caused a decline in popularity of Nuclear Power were public opinion and energy economics. Public Opinion against nuclear power was formed mainly as a result of the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (August, 1945)2, the then ongoing Cold War (1947 - 1991)3, the Three Mile Island Nuclear Accident (March 28, 1979)2 and the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident (26 April, 1986)2. The Arab Oil Embargo (October, 1973)11 and the ensuing energy crisis unexpectedly attached energy and economic issues to this public concern. During the late 1960s and 1970s, costs of electricity generation using coal and nuclear plants were comparable; nuclear plants had higher capital costs but lower fuel and operating costs1B. The cost advantage and popularity of nuclear power slowly started waning out and continued diminishing ......
