Communication among animals is an important concept evaluated in many studies today. Chemical communication is a common area of study due to the fact that there is still a lot of unanswered questions, and a lack of proven knowledge regarding this type of interaction. Pheromones are a common chemical messenger of interest, because unlike most chemical messengers that transmit information within the body of the individual, their purpose is to convey information to another animal. Pheromones are ectohormones, indicating that they are produced and excreted from the outside of the body. Ectohormones are subdivided into two types: those that act on other animals of the same species (homoiohormones), and those that act of other animals of a different species (allomones). Pheromones are a more common term for homoiohormones (Brown et al. 1985). Although pheromones appear similar to true hormones, they are different for a number of reasons.
