The Impossibility of Utopian Marxism In the United States, if not most of the world, Marxism and communism are infamous words. Karl Marx, who together with Frederick Engels wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1848, never imagined their political philosophy would be judged this way. Marx’s notion of communism is rooted in an ideological principle that promoted the brotherhood and equality of man, the right of individuals to self-govern, and the goal of “fair distribution and social justice through political command structures” (Barber 22). Surprisingly, this abridged interpretation of Marx’s philosophy may sound fundamentally similar when comparing it with the basis of our own American system. The difference is in the implementation of these ideals. While difficult to find fault in the root of Marxist egalitarian principles, the fundamental ideology itself is a quixotic impossibility in the modern world. An analysis of the context under which Marxist philosophy evolved combined with the development of the welfare state and natural human nature allows an understanding of why......
