The Effect on Yeast at Different Temperatures Introduction This exercise involves the use of Yeast. Yeast is single celled fungi used in baking and brewing. They break down food by means of enzymes which they secrete, absorb the small molecules that result, and use them as a source of energy. One of the byproduct of this is Carbon Dioxide gas. It is this gas that makes bread rise. The other byproduct is ethyl alcohol, which accumulates as brewed. (Doezema, Bette. 2004. Experiencing Biology. Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, Iowa. 197 pages.) In our experiment we used two flasks. Flask A was kept at 37 degrees Celsius and flask B was kept at 4 degrees Celsius. While comparing the two flasks I observe that flask A has foam in it, while flask B didn’t have any foam. Also flask A felt warmer than flask B, but the smelled the same. So this lead us to the experiment question, why does flask A have foam but Flask B does not? Our hypothesis was, the foam is created by chemical reactions, based on temperature.
