According to the definition provided by Peggy Levitt, social remittances are; ideas such as values and beliefs; identities such as citizen or ethnicity; patterns of behavior such as customs and cultural practices, and social capital that flows between a host country and a sending community. She further refines social remittances as being direct and traveling through identifiable path ways such as between family members. The impact of these remittances depends on the nature of these remittances as well as the sender; that is to say the remittance will have a greater impact if it is easier to accept in large by the receiving society and the if status of the sender is more prestigious.
