Great Expectations, written by Charles Dickens, published in 1861 but previously released in a weekly series in 1860, Dickens penultimate novel, was a novel that brings up many issues and themes close to Dickens heart, such as the way in which children were mistreated and criminology. The novel is a Buildungsroman retelling the story of a young, warm hearted, kind polite boy brought up it the unjust Victorian era similar to Dickens memories of his own childhood. As this naïve child, Pip, grows older his views on life take a drastic change for the worse as he discovers wealth very suddenly at an early age. From once being a kind, generous boy Pip matures into a heartless, undignified, self-confessed snob, ashamed of what he has once was. Tired of being viewed as a common labouring boy by Estella, Pip sets the task upon himself of becoming what he believes is a gentleman in order to win her over.
