The Democratic Systems of Athens and the United States of America
Athens set the foundation for what we know as democracy. Democracy, derived from demos (people) and kratia (strength/power), a democracy simply is a form of government in which the citizens have the power. The question is, how democratic was Athens? What of American democracy? My answer: both were mostly, but definitely not completely, democratic.
Athens was a direct democracy, meaning that all citizens had a voice in the government. After the Reforms of Ephialtes, as well as further work done by Pericles (the time period being the late 460s until about 322 BC), the Areopagus (final court of justice, made up of ex-archons) lost much of its power which was then divided amongst the Ekklesia (the council of all male citizens), the Boule (which made the agenda for the Ekklesia), and the Dikasteria (the law courts manned by citizen juries). This shift in power effectively turned Athens from an aristocracy into a democratic system.
However good this seems, there were flaws in the mechanics of the government. ......
