In his article, Giddens compares different cultures in sexuality, emotional life, marriage and family. He talks about how the divorce in China is different than the western countries. In china, the state is considering making divorce more difficult. Marriage is a working contract, than can be dissolved. Giddens says that in the Chinese countryside, everything is different. Marriage and the family are much more traditional. Marriage is an arrangement between two families, fixed by the parents rather than the individuals concerned.
Giddens also talks about sex and sexual relations between a man and a woman, perhaps a husband and his wife. In mediaeval Europe, marriage was not contracted on the basis of sexual love. A French historian, Georges Duby says, marriage in the middle ages was not involve frivolity, passion, or fantasy. In Europe, women and children had no rights in the traditional family.
