An estimated 10 million people have osteoporosis in the United States at the minute, and approximately 34 million have decreased bone density which puts them at an increased risk for developing the disease. Also, about 1.5 million fractures are caused annually in the US alone due to osteoporosis. Beacause of the great impact osteoporosis has today, a lot of research has been done to try to find treatment and most importantly prevention for this disease.
A study was completed that examined if increased calcium intake would decrease the effects that birth control pills have on bone mass in women. The study was conducted because an estimated 80% of all women have taken oral contraceptives, and research has shown that taking birth control pills may prevent young women from achieving peak bone mass. Another cause could be lack of calcium which may more likely occur in teens and the elderly.
