Most, if not all people know at least a little bit about the attack on Pearl Harbor on Sunday morning, December 7th 1941. Everyone’s heard about it or has seen the movie made about this terrible day for America. But what really happened? Did Japan succeed in getting what they were striving for with this attack? Japan had seize Manchuria in 1931 and had been fighting the Second Sino-Japanese War with China since 1937. During 1941 these military adventures were leading to the rise of the long-standing tensions between the Japanese Empire and the United States. The USA and the UK reacted to these Japanse military actions by imposing a boycott of scrap metal, followed by a boycott of oil and the closing of the Panama Canal to Japanese shipping. The oil boycott was especially threatening to Japan (and its military), which lacked oil resources of its own. The Japanese leaders decided that they had only two choices: give in to the demands of the USA and the UK and back out of China, or escalate the conflict to try and aquire sources of oil in Southeast Asia.
