17 June 2005 The theme of the American Dream in Of Mice and Men The American Dream is the idea of freedom, often associated with migrant workers, that is held so tightly by many in th United States. As the story goes, if one works hard with courage and determination; one can achieve prosperity. All of the characters in Of Mice and Men are unable to reach their ultimate dreams. The following essay take s a closer look at why the American Dream is unachievable. Although Crooks has hidden dreams of his own he criticizes Lennie; by saying: “Nobody goes to heaven an nobody gets no land” (Steinbeck 47) Perhaps he condemns Lennie’s dream because he knows that his are unreachable. Crooks clearly states his vulnerabilities - he is a black man with a physical disability- thus making it impossible to pursue his dream. Believing in yourself is the first step in dreaming. George, on the other hand, builds up his hopes base on someone who is successful in his eyes: “I could build a smoke stack [...] like the one gran’pa has (57).
