Girl with a Pearl Earring Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The main theme in this painting is well, a girl wearing a pearl earring. This explains why it is named Girl with a Pearl Earring. Since Vermeer painted it in about 1660-1665, it is debatable who the painting is of, but is thought to have been his youngest daughter, Maria.
Of the sparse things we know about Vermeer, we do know that he based his paintings on the things he saw. We know that sometimes he did paint from live models, or simply painted from memory. But, the thing that he is renowned for his talent in depth, and light. He focused his attention on the lighting, he perfectly made shadows and gave the painting amazing realness. He was the camera of the 1600s!
No one quite knows the exact birth date of Jan Vermeer, but it is thought of to be sometime in October, 1632. Oddly enough, we know the precise date of his baptism. October 31, 1632. He was born in Delft, Holland where he lived his life. Where he inherited an art gallery called the Mechelen, and that is probably where he inherited his artistic abilities. When he died in 1675, he was virtually forgotten.
