The Declining American Dream in The Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Great Gatsby is often discussed as one of the great American literature classics of all time. The common conclusion offered is that this novel is a commentary on the American Dream. Assumptions can be made about F. Scott Fitzgerald approving of the American Dream but it is revealed that he used many symbols to represent the overall decline and corruption of this dream. This rags to riches masterpiece has many hidden symbols that show that financial status and social power do not always lead to success. Fitzgerald tries to provide an explanation so that people realize what the dream has become in the 1920s. To illustrate this he uses the Buchanons green dock light, the T.J. Eckleberg billboard, and automobiles to provide a deeper understanding of what is wrong with the American Dream.
