Diabetes Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

One of the most mysterious diseases today is Diabetes. It is called the silent killer because it affects it victims seemingly without warning signs and randomly. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. Diabetes is growing rapidly among Americans, 18.2 million people in the United States, or 6.3% of the population, have diabetes. While an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 5.2 million people are unaware that they have the disease. With so many people being infected and without many warnings, it is a scary thought for Americans because they are unsure how to escape it. However, what might even be scarier is that the cause for this disease is yet to be determined. Doctors speculate that genetics, environmental factors, obesity, and physical inactivity lead to type 2 diabetes, but are unsure as to what exactly causes the disease, especially the other three types.
