Book Review of Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In the book The Bean Trees, Marietta Taylor Greer is forced to make the quick jump between young adulthood and maturity when her casual road trip turns into a series of life changing experiences. Set in the 1980's, Barbara Kingsolver uses the change of scenery between rural Kentucky to big city Arizona to illustrate the transitions in Greers life.
The first encounter that bestows Marietta, the narrator, is the delivery of an infant on the passenger seat of her beat up Volkswagen, who later becomes known as Turtle. Throughout the novel they grow close to each other and provide the backbone for the theme of companionship which Kingsolver displays.
Upon arrival in Arizona, the pair come across many people. From hippies to illegal immigrants to their future room mate Lou Ann; a new mother and single parent. When Turtle and Taylor arrive in Tucson, they have nothing. Through Taylors perseverance and strong will, she finds a job and a nice woman to look after her.
