On July 4, 1881, the school was set for its opening day in which he had two buildings reserved for accommodation, a shed and a church. Booker T. Washington welcomed all white and colored people to the campus. Through the years before the school was up and ready to go, Mr. Washington had two very good friends, which he depended on the most for guidance and advice. These two men are Mr. George W. Campbell and Mr. Lewis Adams. Mr. George W. Campbell was a white man and an ex-slaveholder and Mr. Lewis was a black man and an ex-slave in which he learned the trades of shoemaking, harness making, and tin smiting during the days of slavery. Mr. Campbell was also a banker and merchant. On the other hand, Mr. Adams secondary work was being a mechanic. These two men were also responsible for writing to General Armstrong for a teacher.
The morning of the first day of school, there was an attendance of thirty students and one teacher, Mr. Booker T. Washington himself. As each week went by, more and more interested students enrolled in the institute. After six weeks have past, there was a new fac......
