Since the election of George Washington, political campaigns have been full of divergence and controversy. The two main candidates in the presidential election of 1972 where Richard Nixon and George McGovern. Although there were many issues that greatly impacted the election, the economy and the Vietnam War were the two major issues. Little did everyone know that this election would end in one of the largest political scandals in United States history when the Watergate break-in and cover-up was discovered. The Democrats had many solid candidates to choose for the nomination in 1972. The leading candidates were Senator George McGovern of South Dakota, Edmund Muskie of Maine, Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, and Governor George C Wallace of Alabama. Some of the lesser known candidates were Mayor Sam Yorty of Los Angeles, Rep. Wilbur Mills of Arkansas, Mayor John Lindsay of New York, and Shirley Chisholm of New York, who was the first black person to run for the president.
