Madeline Coleman World Literature Paper I February 16, 2005 The Intervention of gods in the Iliad In Homer’s The Iliad the gods have a considerable amount of interaction with the mortals. And most of the time because of their involvement it leads to a tremendous amount of pain, suffering, and death. These so called “gods” are not portrayed in a typical godlike manner: loyal, forgiving, and wise. Instead they are petty, trivial, and fight amongst themselves as children. The gods have a constant interest in the lives of the humans, but not in a matriarchal and patriarchal way. They are always meddling with them. One reason may be is because many of the gods have had illegitimate children be humans. This understandably could lead to some problems. By the gods having children with humans this no doubt would upset their own godly wife or husband and at the same time the gods that do have these children by mortal may feel an obligation towards them. This no doubt will cause them to take sides, have favorites, or dislikes toward certain individuals. The god’s intervention between......
