Assess the achievements of Cyrus II (the great) as king of Persia
Cyrus the Great made many significant contributions and achievements during his rule that allowed Persia to become the great empire that it was. Such achievements include his administrative techniques, his conquests of other countries, tolerance of their religions and cultures, he introduced coinage and his building program.
Cyrus has been recognised as the greatest ruler of his time which was achieved by the conquest of other nations. Herodotus in book 6 of the Histories describes Cyrus' conquests of Media and Lydia. Herodotus explains Cyrus' battle techniques which helped him to achieve victory over other kingdoms, for example; the use of camels against the Median cavalry and thus victory was gained. The conquest of Babylon was a major achievement for Cyrus. Babylon was a powerful city of the Near East which Herodotus describes as "surpassing in spleandor any city of the known world".
