There are many different medications that are presently used to treat and control bipolar disorder. Discussed here are the most popular medicinal treatments which include the mood stabilizer lithium, anticonvulsants, antipsychotic medications, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
The medication used most often to treat bipolar disorder is lithium. Lithium evens out mood swings in both directions, from mania to depression and depression to mania, and is therefore used as an ongoing maintenance treatment for bipolar disorder. Although lithium will reduce severe manic episodes in about five to fourteen days, it may be weeks to several months before the condition is fully controlled (Rice, 2005).
Many studies have been done to test the efficacy of lithium. One group of studies showed that about 35 percent of patients receiving lithium and 80 percent of patients receiving placebo experienced relapse (Torrey & Knable, 2002).
