Some research claims to have demonstrated that stress has an effect on the immune system. Kiecolt-Glaser’s study is an example of this as her aim was to investigate whether the stress of examinations has an effect on the immune system. To do this, Kiecolt-Glaser et al, in 1984 studied 75 medical students, before and during their exams. Using blood samples from the students, NK cell activity could be measured. From this, they found that the NK cell activity was reduced a lot more in the blood sample during the exam than before the exam. This meant that once the exam period has begun, the students’ immune system had started to suppress. The students were also given questionnaires so that Kiecolt-Glaser et al could get an insight in to other psychological variables that may affect the results, such as life events. From this, they found that those students who reported high levels of life events or loneliness, had the most reduced NK cell activity. However, there are many criticisms of the study.
