Socialism is a social and economical ideal that arose in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century in response to social and economic changes due to the Industrial Revolution. As business boomed across the United States, owners were keeping more and more of the profit leaving laborers with poor wages and even poorer working conditions. It seemed like a viable alternative to capitalism which bred numerous, unjust distributions of wealth. Edward Bellamy and Eugene V. Debs were two socialist advocates who envisioned a socialist government taking hold in the United States. Though they agreed on many of the same principles, they disagreed on how the change would come about in our society.
The main goal of socialists in the early nineteenth century was to minimize all the extreme unfair allocations of capital. Trusts and monopolies were forming and a small percentage of the population was controlling a very large percentage of the money.
