The Great Gatsby is a tale based on the American dream, a dream that anyone with their own perseverance and hard work can make it from rags to riches. It is set around the fictional communities of East egg and West egg.
Nick is the Great Gatsbys next door neighbour and Nicks second cousin once removed was once romantically involved with Jay Gatz also known as the Great Gatsby. The plot revolves around the main characters obsessions, unrequited loves, and the turmoil these things cause in their seemingly perfect lives.
The book is told in prose which is at the same time detached as well as highly emotive. The author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses colour to describe feelings, atmosphere, situations and even music. A beautiful example is nicks description at one of Gatsbys lavish parties of the yellow cocktail music this gives an aura of fun, fast and alive music.
The language used also defines the stereotypical roles of men and women of that particular era. Women seem to be without any real substance or immoral like Jordan a friend of daisy. ......
