The aftermath Justinians re-conquest of Italy in 533 left Italian cities largely depopulated, from around 500 to 1000 AD, Italy was mostly rural countryside with few, and thinly populated cities. Around the 12th century, urban living began to resurface, and by the 13th century some Italian cities such as Genoa and Venice began to grow prosperous from trade with the Muslims and Byzantines. As these cities continued to accumulate wealth, some of these cites became banking centers long before the rest of Europe as discovered this lucrative area of commerce. But during this time the church had been experiencing many difficulties due to the great western schism and the Avingon papacy. This made it easier for the growth of these baking centers and money markets to emerge because during the Middle Ages the church believed that lending money at interest (usury) was a mortal sin, which would lead ones soul to eternal damnation.
