Film Review on Bitter Cane Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Haiti has a highly dependent and underdeveloped economy which independent Haiti inherited in 1804” (Haiti in the World Economy). Until this day, the Caribbean country of Haiti remains the poorest most underdeveloped country in the western hemisphere. Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, if one was to economically assess the Dominican republic, we would see that it is far more developed than Haiti. As a matter of fact, all other Caribbean islands are far more developed than Haiti. This leads us to ask the question; what factors contribute to the underdevelopment of this island? According to the documentary, “Bitter Cane”, Haiti’s main source of income is through agriculture, specifically coffee, which is grown by peasant farmers and given to their landlords in return for the opportunity to farm their land. This feudalism portrayed in the film illustrates a major basis as to why Haiti remains underdeveloped to the present day.
