Widely used today by teenagers, slang terminology is becoming increasingly popular throughout the United States. When children become young adults, they develop a need to cultivate a sense of individualism, which is where slang comes in. Teens believe that usage of slang shows a sign of independence. Some slang words mean opposite from the literal meaning. For example: sick, ill, and nasty; you would think those words mean disgusting or gross, but their meanings in slang actually mean awesome or great. Other slang terms can just be regular phrases from everyday life blended into a single word, such as aiight, which is short for all right, and wassup, which is short for Whats up? Another example is fo shizzle which means for sure. These slang words annoy adults because they can be a form of a private joke between the users of the language.
