The Lotter by Shirley Jackson Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, raises many questions in the back of a reader’s mind towards the destructive yet blind rituals of mankind. Unknown to the reader, “The Lottery’s” setting foreshadows exactly the opposite of what is to come. Men and women are gathered in the center of a small town talking about farming and taxes and random gossip. Jackson describes children breaking into “boisterous play and their talk still of the classroom” (1). The actual tradition does not reflect in the mood of the participants. The town holds a lottery once a year where all the families gather around in a big crowd in the Village Square. Mr. Summers, the town mayor of sorts, brings a black box to the middle of the square and calls each husband up to pick a piece of paper. The man who draws the paper with a small circle on it has to pick from the box again, this time to select the fate of one of his family members. When everyone has picked, the reader finds out that Bill Hutchinson has drawn the fateful circle. Mr. Summers then organizes the next drawing which includes Tessie Hutchinson, ......
