The aim of the opening scene in many of Shakespeares plays was to settle an audience to begin viewing a play. In Shakespeares time theatre was very different, it was a form of cheap entertainment for the masses. Many people would crowd in the globe theatre standing up, so the opening scene was designed to grip the people who bought the cheaper tickets on the standing ground called the groundlings, so they didnt talk or disturb the performance.
An example of this is in Macbeth, the opening scene the three witches were designed to shock and scare the audience because an Elizabethan audience would have been highly superstitious and believed in witchcraft and the supernatural.
A challenge staged by re-staging the play would be that a modern audiences beliefs and shock tolerance would have changed over time and differs from that of an Elizabethan audience. A modern director would need ......
