The purpose of this essay is to illustrate the way pressure groups affect the activities and policies of businesses by using the example of Philip Morris (PM), which is an international tobacco company. Moreover, recommendations on the actions Philip Morris should be setting in will be included as well. Pressure groups are groups without the direct political power, which seek to influence the policies and activities of governments and business organizations. (Marcouse, 2001) According to different overall objectives, they can be divided into two terms: cause group, which act for society and humankind generally, e.g. Friends of the Earth and Action on Smoking and Health (ASH); and interest group, which act on the behalf of group members, e.g. Trade unions, and Freedom Organisation for the Rights to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco (FOREST). Stakeholder is an individual or group which has an effect on and is affected by an organization, (Marcouse, 2001) e.g. managers, employees, governments and pressure groups.
