Themes of jealousy and deception in Othello Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The dramatic representation of some serious action, arousing pity and fear, is what Aristotle described tragedy to be. Othello is one of Shakespeares plays that are classed as tragedies. There are certain characteristics of the play that place it in this category. Typical of a Shakespearian tragedy, this play features a tragic hero that is Othello. Othello is deceived and tricked by Iago into believing that his wife Desdemona is being unfaithful to him. Look to your wife, observe her well with Cassio. After killing his wife, Othello realizes his misfortune and in turn kills himself. The play features numerous solo speeches from Othello and Iago which again are typical of Shakespearian tragedies. In the plays, characters make soliloquies to help the audience understand them better. The final characteristic is the fact that it has a tragic ending where Othello as well as Desdemona die. This is a recurrent theme in all of the great tragedies.
