The Awakening Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the conclusion of The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, the main character Edna Pontellier commits suicide by swimming out into the ocean until she has no strength to return, leading to her inevitable drowning. Like the deaths of the women in the other of Kate Chopin’s stories, Edna’s drowning would at first seem to be a sign of her defeat, but in actuality, it is a great victory for Edna. Edna, like most women in Kate Chopin’s stories, lives in Louisiana at the dawn of the twentieth century. At this time, Napoleonic Law had a firm grip on the land, leaving married women few rights and divorcées even less. She is in –what she feels to be—an oppressive marriage to Léonce Pontellier. A divorce is out of the question for her. After partaking in a few of life’s pleasures; music, swimming, an illicit affair or two, Edna finds it hard to remain in the shackles of her unhappy union to Léonce.
