Looking Beyond the Words Colors have always played an important role in writing. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is no exception. The colors are so much more than words; they have real meaning behind them. Most of the time people never notice them in the sentence; it is just another word to them. The main colors that stand out in this story were green and white. The color green is a symbol for hope and new life. “And I give you, sir, this gold-embroidered girdle, for the cloth is as green as my own” (236-237). The sash that the Hostess gives Gawain is green. Gawain accepts this green sash because he knows that the next day he will have to hold up his end of the bet. The Hostess tells Gawain that the sash will keep him alive as long as he wears it. Gawain loved his life so much that he took the sash without any question. The green sash stands for the new life Gawain will begin because of it. Gawain took the sash in hopes that it really would spare him his life. At the end Gawain decides to keep the sash to remind him of the moment he started his new life. The color white stan......
