In Kate Chopin’s “The Storm,” and “The Story of am Hour,” the author conveys women’s suppressed passions and emotions. The two wives have hidden desires which they are unable to openly express or act upon due to societal and cultural beliefs during the time in which they lived. In their lifetime women were not given as much opportunity as they are today. Men played the dominant role in marriages and women were left to take on the duties of being compliant housewives. Both of Chopin’s stories take the reader through the journey of each woman’s glimpse at feeling alive, uninhibited, and being able to unleash their inner emotions. Chopin relates each woman’s discontent to the time period they live in. Calixta understood that married women were not to be seen alone with other men, “She had not seen him very often since her marriage, and never alone (858).” In “The Story of an Hour,” the normal thing for a wife to do upon her husband’s death was to morn, which was the complete opposite of what Mrs. Mallard did.
