Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus or Caligula was born on August 31, 12 A.D. To Germanicus and Agrippina the elder. His father was the nephew of Tiberius, making him the nephew of an Emperor. When he was between the ages of two and four, accompanying his parents on military campaigns on the German frontier, they would dress him in a miniature soldiers outfit. The soldiers began calling him Caligula, which came from the word caliga, which meant little sandals because of the small military sandals he wore. This nickname stays with him for the rest of his life and even until this day some refer to him as Caligula. (Fagan)
Unfortunately, his mother and older brothers were arrested and killed by the prefect Sejanus after being accused of treason when he was still young. This obviously affected him greatly. Luckily, Sejanus was arrested and killed before he could get rid of Caligula. In the year 31 AD he was invested as a priest, and afterwards went and lived on Capreae with the emperor Tiberius and appointed joint heir with his cousin Tiberius Gemellus (Caligula).
