Religious Fundamentalism in Modern Society
Since the tragedy that was September 11th, mainstream media has been hesitant to directly approach the religious dimension to the fight against terrorism. Andrew Sullivan, in his article This is a Religious War, writes a clear picture of Islamic fundamentalism, and its fight against westernization. Sullivan attempts to discern the logic behind the fundamentalist movement within Islam. He also shows why fundamentalism is at odds with the modernizing beliefs of Western cultures, and the antagonism towards America. The author hopes, if not to point to a solution, to educate the reader on the true depth of the conflict we face, beyond the bombs and politicians. Sullivans main point is that before we can fight the enemy, we must first understand him and why he is fighting against our ideals.
