Man is born with neither a good nor an evil inclination. “The only thing one really knows about human nature is that it changes” (Oscar Wilde). Generally early in ones life a personality or disposition is determined. This essay will look at the influence media plays on character, how peer group influences an individual and how social and parental interaction affect the character of human beings. “Media violence can lead to aggressive behavior in children.” (American Academy of Pediatrics). According to studies done by the American Academy of Pediatrics, by the age of 18 the average American child will have viewed over 200,000 acts of violence on television. To children under the age of 8, television violence can have a huge effect on how they behave because they cannot tell the difference between life and fantasy. Therefore for young children what they view on television is seen as reality and therefore acceptable behavior. “They can be traumatized viewing these images” (American Academy of Pediatrics).
