The words Adolescence and Tenderness are words that we hear on a day to day basis. But does any one actually sit down and ever ponder about the real value, meaning, and significance behind these small and seemingly simple words? In the Poem Adolescence III by Rita Dove, and the Poem Tenderness by Stephen Dunn, one can absorb the true significance that lies behind these two words. Both poems present two completely different scenarios dealing with an individual having to mature, develop, and grow up. To start, it is simple to see that Adolescence III is written in the point of view of a young, physically developing girl, as demonstrated on lines 3-5 of the poem “I too grew orange and softer, swelling out starched cotton slips”. On the other hand, Tenderness is written in the point of view of a twenty-three year old emotionally developing guy, one can see this in lines 30-33 of the poem “I think it was terror that at first that drove me to touch her so softly”.
