Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on April 21, 1939, Sister Helen Prejean was born into an upper-middle-class Catholic family and lived in a community profoundly divided by race and class. In Dead Man Walking, Sister Helen Prejean narrates her experiences with racial violence and social injustices.
Helen Prejean, a Catholic nun, is the author and narrator of this book. She contributes her life to work for social justice by adopting a quiet religious life. After a religious experience, she decides work with the residents of the St. Thomas housing project in New Orleans. While working at St. Thomas, Helen gains knowledge of the daily hardship face by low-income families. Helen then becomes a full-time anti-death penalty advocate and agrees to be a spiritual advisor to death row inmates, even though it means she will have to witness executions. Working with death row inmates moved her to not only minister the men on death row, but also try to heal the families of their victims.
