A college education is perceived as an elite standard in life that earns respect in certain aspects of society, depending on the time period in which the education had taken place. The goal of a recipient of a college degree in today’s education system is viewed to help one prepare for the world in choosing a career that they love in a fully functional society with the power of thinking for oneself, which is in turn viewed as a key to success in life. In Henry Adams’s era of the 1850s, the goal of a college education was to construct “leaders of men” in the social and political world (Adams 32). Although the ultimate goal of a college degree has changed over the last 150 years, the final result is a far-miss from what is trying to be accomplished. The final result of a college education remains to possess a “stamp of approval” in society.
