The academics of sociology have changed much from its birth to the early twentieth century. The term "sociology" was first coined by Auguste Comte in 1838. Comte hoped to unify all studies of humankind, including: history, psychology and economics because he believed all human life had passed through the same distinct historical stages and that, if one could grasp this progress, one could prescribe the remedies for social ills. Later as sociology became more popular among the social sciences in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, more and more people began paying greater attention to it figures such as Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim, and Max Weber. However, unlike Comte, these figures did not just study cultural differences and society, but also addressed religion, education, ethics, philosophy, and theology.
